ISO 19650 Compliance - Information Management & Common Data Environment (CDE)
Statement of Compliance
SmartProject complies with the information management principles, processes, and governance requirements defined under ISO 19650-1 and ISO 19650-2 for the management of information over the delivery phase of built assets.
The system provides a Common Data Environment (CDE) that supports structured information exchange, approval workflows, auditability, and owner-side governance in accordance with ISO 19650.
Scope of ISO 19650 Compliance
SmartProject compliance is applicable to the following ISO 19650 functional areas:
- Information management process definition and control
- Common Data Environment (CDE) workflow management
- Information container lifecycle management
- Role-based access and approval governance
- Auditability and traceability of information exchanges
Out of scope:
Native BIM authoring, model federation, clash detection, and automated IFC/COBie schema validation.
Alignment to ISO 19650 Core Requirements
Information Management Process (ISO 19650-1 / 19650-2)
SmartProject enables the appointing party to define and manage:
- Organizational, Asset, and Project Information Requirements (OIR, AIR, PIR)
- Discipline-wise and package-wise deliverable registers
- Information delivery milestones aligned to project schedules
- Defined approval, acceptance, and rejection workflows
- Controlled information exchange points across project stages
All information exchanges are time-stamped, version-controlled, and fully auditable.
Common Data Environment (CDE)
SmartProject provides a centralized, owner-controlled CDE supporting the following ISO 19650 states:
| ISO 19650 CDE State | System Support |
|---|---|
| Work in Progress (WIP) | Controlled internal draft states |
| Shared | Approved-for-coordination status |
| Published | Approved-for-construction / issue status |
| Archived | Immutable historical record |
Access to each state is governed by role-based permissions and approval authority matrices.
Information Containers & Metadata
The system enforces:
- Unique identification of information containers
- Configurable metadata attributes including discipline, package, system, location, and revision
- Revision and version control rules
- Status-based suitability for use
- Linkage of information containers to WBS, schedules, and contract packages
ISO 19650 naming conventions can be implemented through configurable naming schemas where required by the Employer’s Information Requirements (EIR).
Roles, Responsibilities & Governance
SmartProject supports ISO 19650 role concepts including:
- Appointing Party
- Lead Appointed Party
- Task Teams
- Information Management roles
- Approval Authorities
Roles, responsibilities, and approval rights are configurable to align with the project’s EIR and responsibility matrices.
Auditability, Traceability & Records
The system maintains a complete and immutable audit trail including:
- Submission dates and authorship
- Review and approval actions
- Comments and responses
- Status changes and revisions
- Historical versions and archival records
These records support dispute resolution, claims analysis, regulatory audits, and post-project handover requirements.
Integration with BIM Authoring Platforms
Where native BIM authoring, model coordination, or clash detection is required, Wrench-SmartProject operates in conjunction with specialized BIM platforms (e.g., Autodesk Construction Cloud).
In such cases:
- BIM platforms act as the design CDE
- Wrench-SmartProject acts as the owner’s governance and approval CDE
This combined architecture ensures full compliance with ISO 19650 without duplication of functionality.
Compliance Declaration
SmartProject confirms that:
- The platform aligns with ISO 19650 information management principles
- The system supports ISO-compliant workflows, approvals, and governance
- Configuration can be tailored to meet project-specific EIR requirements
- Limitations relating to BIM authoring and model validation are clearly defined and transparent
Summary Positioning Statement
SmartProject Provides an ISO 19650-aligned Common Data Environment focused on owner-side information governance, approval control, and lifecycle traceability, while integrating seamlessly with specialist BIM authoring platforms where required.
Overall Compliance Summary
| ISO 19650 Area | Status |
|---|---|
| Information governance | 🟢 Strong |
| CDE workflow & control | 🟢 Strong |
| Approval & auditability | 🟢 Strong |
| Metadata & naming | 🟡 Configurable |
| BIM authoring & coordination | 🔴 Out of scope |
SmartProject demonstrates strong alignment with ISO 19650-1 and ISO 19650-2 for information management, CDE workflows, approval governance, and auditability. BIM authoring and model coordination functions are intentionally out of scope and are addressed through integration with specialist BIM platforms.
